Festa de Fado

The Deccan Heritage Foundation in association with Fado de Goa brought to Goa the first ever Festa de Fado, on the 21st January 2018 at the Maquinez Palace in Panaji.

The event included a master class on Fado conducted by Goa's very own Fadista, Sonia Shirsat, who introduced and educated participants about the music along with practical demonstrations and videos. Fado de Goa students also presented what they had learnt over the past year. This was followed by a concert where the students of Fado de Goa performed together with their mentor, Sonia Shirsat.

Fado de Goa is an on-going initiative of Sonia and the Taj Hotels Palaces Resorts Safaris, through which over 200 students to date from the Margao, Panjim and Vasco chapters have been educated in this music genre through sessions of theory as well as singing. In addition to assignments, they have completed written and oral exams before an external panel consisting of experts in music and the Portuguese language.

"It is going to be a beautiful experience of Fado for the die-hard fans and uninitiated alike, showcasing the Fado de Goa project. Looking forward to this humble beginning of something that I can only see grow manifold in the future."

"Taj is commited towards preserving and promoting indigenous heritage, culture, arts and handicrafts. In doing so, Taj takes pride in showcasing and valuing one of Goa's unique music forms through the project 'Fado de Goa'. Festa de Fado is a celebration of the overwhelming response the project has received in just one year of its inception. It gives us an opportunity to acknowledge the commitment of the students across Goa and a platform to encourage the talent at a professional level."
